The
American Heritage Blues Hall of Fame Induction Night
Newcastle Blues and Rock Club Friday
26th September 2014 The Blues Hall of Fame was set up in the USA in 1999. Les was asked to be an ambassador for the Hall of Fame when he accompanied Trevor Sewell to Hollywood earlier this year. Both Trevor and Les were into the Blues Hall of Fame while they were in Hollywood in recognition of Trevor's contribution to music and Les for his radio show Wall to Blues. Now, bringing the Blues Hall of Fame to Blighty, we were treated to a fabulous evening, celebrating the blues music scene in the north-east of England. MC for the evening was Newcastle Blues and Rock Club's Les Routledge, who did a fine job of keeping the evening moving along. He also made sure that the Trevor Sewell Band - house band for the night - kept reminding us why we were here treating us to some 'splendid' music notably ICMA winner 'The Train', and great covers, including 'Stray Cat Strut' and 'Hey Joe'. The first inductee of the evening was legendary north-east music promoter Geoff Docherty, who brought bands such as Free and Led Zeppelin to the area in the sixties and seventies. Geoff entertained the audience with some great tales from 'back in the day', and I'm sure everyone would have been happy to listen to Geoff for hours! As good as that might have been, it would have denied us the pleasure of hearing from the other commendable inductees to the Hall of Fame. George Shovlin has been playing to audiences, teaching the art of playing delta blues and generally organizing blues evenings for over 40 years. His recognition was richly deserved, as was someone who, with all due respect to George, is at the opposite end of the age spectrum - Mitch Laddie. The sheer brilliance of his guitar playing belies his 24 years, and was spotted by the legendary Walter Trout when Mitch was just 16! Posthumous inductions were made to Maggie Ross and Barry Robson. Maggie not only had a fantastic voice, which she employed in several ways from singing solo to performing in musicals and teaching, but she also raised a lot of money for children's charities. Barry performed for over 60 years, even while suffering from cancer towards the end of his life. He was an aficionado with the harmonica, playing regularly with the Roadrunners and passing on his talent to young musicians in the north-east. The list of inductees also included the legendary Junco Partners, who famously played alongside the likes of Howlin Wolf, John Mayall and Rod Stewart, and in this their 50th anniversary, are still touring! The inductees also included fantastic photographers John Finlayson and Adam Kennedy, whose work on the local, national and international blues and rock scenes have resulted in images which are enjoyed all around the world; Monkey Junk, aka John Nellist and Andy Turnbull, who not only play a unique style of blues, demonstrated marvelously on the evening, but also run their own blues club in Heaton, Newcastle; and, almost finally, Sedgefield Rock and Blues Club, and the Burnhopfield Unsung Musicians Society, who both do sterling work to keep their local areas on the blues circuit. In recognition of his efforts to successfully establish the Newcastle Blues and Rock Club as a quality venue since it opened in November 2013, Les Routledge and the club itself were also inducted to the Hall of Fame. A great surprise it proved to Les too, but very much deserved! Peppered throughout the evening, were some great performances from many of the artists that were being recognized. Some played solo, some played along with the Trevor Sewell Band - all played beautifully, and brought smiles to faces throughout the room! The jam session towards the end of this fantastic evening was something not to be missed. Thankfully, the cameras were present, so those who weren't lucky enough to be there, will be able to enjoy it, and the rest of this marvelous evening, on video for years to come. Geoff Scott |
